African names encompass a variety of cultures, religions and languages.
Most people in North Africa are of the Muslim faith and therefore tend to use Muslim, Arabic names when naming their children. Central and South Africa maintain the influence of Western culture and frequently use European names when naming their children.
Traditional African names often reflect the order, time, or season of the child's birth. For example born on a given day or at a certain time, first born or second born. The name may also represent circumstances, for example, born while father was away. It is also common for given names to be vocabulary words from the local language.
