In Greek mythology, Daphne is the daughter of Peneus, the river god. She is a Naiad, or nymph associated with fountains, wells, springs and streams.

According to the myth, Daphne is romantically pursued by Apollo, in whom she has no interest. Fearful that he will eventually catch her, Daphne calls to her father for help.

As a water god, Peneus possesses the ability of transformation, and transforms his daughter into a laurel tree so that she may escape Apollo's pursuit.

Her legs take root and her arms turn into branches.

Still infatuated with Daphne, Apollo adorns himself with laurel leaves and claims it as his special tree. It is for this reason that the laurel, is a symbol of the god Apollo.
