The Chelan Indians traditionally lived near Lake Chelan, a long narrow lake in northern Washington. They are an Interior Salish people who speak the Wenatchi dialect.

The name Chelan derives from the traditional Wentachi name Tsi-Laan meaning "deep water" or Tsill-ane meaning "deep notch".

The spelling later changed to Chelan (pronounced sha-lan) possibly through the influence of French hunter / fur trappers that passed through the area.
