Kevin is an Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Caoimhin from the Old Irish Coemgein. It is derived from the Irish elements caomh (coem) meaning "kind, gentle, comely" and gin (gein) meaning "birth".

It was the name of a 7th century saint who is a patron saint of Dublin.
